The phrases “filter bag” and “bag filter” can refer to many types of textile-based filtration products used in a variety of applications. The overview below of applications that use bag filtration is provided as a resource for clarifying the phraseology and provide a basis for discussing your application with the Filter Products team.

Baghouse – A large structure that contains an array of long and comparatively small diameter fabric tubes used to filter exhaust from industrial facilities. A bag filter that is used in a baghouse is usually 6-inches in diameter and can range from 60- to over 200-inches in length. A single baghouse will contain anywhere from a dozen to hundreds of these filters. The textiles used to make these filters are heavy-weight (dense) filtration felts. For high-temperature applications, Nomex or other high-performance aramid felts can be used. PTFE or similar coatings can also be applied to the fabric used to make the filters to enhance the release of particulate from the filter surface during short-duration reversal of flow through the filter, in a process known as back-pulsing. Filter Products Company can provide you with Donaldson Torit brand original equipment and aftermarket replacement filters from AJR Filtration for a variety of bag house applications.

Dust Collector – Generally used on a specific piece of equipment or shared among a few pieces of equipment, dust collectors are often located inside of production environments. This equipment is frequently associated with the collection of sawdust in woodworking facilities, but dust collection systems are common on a variety of contemporary machine tools that generate airborne debris, like CNC routers, laser and plasma arc cutting equipment. It is common for a dust collector to use a cyclonic separator to remove larger and heavier debris from the air stream before a large fabric filter bag – or, in some cases a large format pleated filter cartridge – is used to capture finer dust. After filtration the air is usually exhausted back into the workspace.

Quad, Cube, and Bag Filters – Made from lofted synthetic medias or non-woven synthetics and fiberglass medias, these air filters are used in high-capacity HVAC air handling units to remove contaminates from building air. Quad and cube filters are low-cost, low-efficiency (MERV 5 to7), high-dust holding filters best suited for use as a pre-filter to extend the life of more expensive primary filters. Extended surface bag filters are comparatively high-cost, high-efficiency (MERV 9 to 15), and high-capacity filters. These types of bag filters are suitable as primary filters for improving indoor air quality. Filter Products Company offers Glasfloss brand bag filters for HVAC applications.

Bag Filter Housings – A term that is commonly used to describe industry standard liquid filtration housings that use fabric filter bags in combination with metal mesh strainer baskets. While confusing, the textile filters that are used inside of these housings are also generically referred to as filter bags. Sometimes the phrase “trade size filter bag” is used to differentiate these products from the HVAC filters noted above.

There are several different industry standard sizes, each given a number designation, also known as a trade size. Additional information on ‘standard’ or ‘trade size’ filter bags can be found here.
